MATHEMATICS

French/English Elementary School

Mathematics in the French/English program will be taught in French, and will follow the accredited French curriculum.
Methodologies for teaching mathematics at the elementary school level include teacher-led lessons, student-centered explorative activities, and individual practice.
Various mathematical tools, such as rulers, compasses, and calculators, are made available to students during class.

The 1st grade math program promotes curiosity and interest in mathematics. There is an emphasis on the language and terminology of mathematics, the use of symbols, the use of manipulatives to aid in problem solving, addition with and without regrouping, simple geometry and measurements, sorting and sets, and prediction and estimation.

In 2nd grade, the mathematics curriculum is designed to teach numbers to 1,000 and basic computation skills, including multiplication and subtraction. The students expand their math vocabulary and continue to do mental computations.

By the 3rd grade, the mathematics curriculum assumes a proficiency in computational and operational skills and their application in problem solving. Emphasis is placed on student methods and the ability to explain the solution, not just arrive at the solution.

In 4th grade, there is an even greater emphasis placed on precise calculation, computation techniques, and problem solving skills.

The 5th grade mathematics curriculum involves more sophisticated operations with fractions and decimals. Precision as well as comprehension continues to be emphasized in all mathematical contexts.
