ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

French/English Elementary School

The 1st and 2nd grade English language arts curriculum is a literature rich, balanced literacy program where the students learn to read and write using a variety of methodologies and materials. The students in 3rd to 5th grade use their reading and writing skills to learn more content specific material. The students work in large groups, small groups, individually, and through group work centers.

During English instructional time at all grade levels, the students are exposed to a wide variety of texts. The English teacher reads aloud often, and books and authors are discussed. Guided reading is facilitated in whole group, small group, and one-on-one situations. Older students read a variety of literature that they then discuss, analyze, compare, and contrast both verbally and in written form.

The students learn to write based on writing process activities (brainstorm, draft, conference, revise, edit, and publish). The English teacher models writing and teaches grammar, spelling, and writing based on mini-lessons. The students write poetry, play with the language's nuances, and learn how to use word banks and dictionaries. They learn to write in different styles including letters, directions, note taking, etc. Personal journals, literature based writing assignments, writing from prompts, and free choice writing are a large part of the weekly routine.

Oral language is practiced through teacher and student facilitated discussions about books and vocabulary, sharing time, Reader's Theater, drama, skits, and role-playing. Public speaking skills are developed through reports and events, informal sharing opportunities, and formal oral presentations.
