Third graders, snuggled in blankets, sleeping bags, or beach towels, participated in a nationwide Read 2003 program sponsored by Scholastic Books. Children are challenged to read silently for 2003 seconds! Our third graders joined students from the United States, and several other countries, to sustain silently reading for these 2003 seconds to celebrate the New Year. Children in our third grade are already required to read a chapter book for at least fifteen minutes, at least four times a week. So they brought their own book from home, or selected a new book off the third grade reading library cart, to read for this occasion in class. The students often read silently in class, but they do not usually spread out on the floor, desks, and chairs with stuffed animals and soft blankets. This made D.E.A.R. time, or "Drop Everything And Read" time, a bit more special. We are proud to announce that most of our third graders met the challenge and read for approximately 33 minutes without interruption. Congratulations third graders, and Happy New Year to all!
