Knitting in CE2 with Susan
Tricot en CE2 avec Susan

In Brooksville, busy hands and knitting needles are happily creating blankets for the orphaned animals at the Peninsula Humane Society, here in Palo Alto. The idea for the project came from last year's Student Council project of collecting old towels to give to the Humane Society. When over 100 towels were delivered, the people at the Humane Society were very pleased with our efforts. Since third graders have very busy hands naturally, putting some knitting needles, to work in those hands, not only benefits the orphaned animals, but they also help active hands to be doing something productive while listening. Most of the third graders took the opportunity to learn to knit. A few of them decided their hands, needles, and yarn were not a match right now, but most of them became true knitters. At first, Mrs. Brooks taught a few students each day . Soon, more and more children started to bring in needles and yarn, so students began teaching other students. The project is literally growing. There are always a few "community" knitting needles to share as the students continue making their squares for the blanket quilts.
